Chemistry Students Brews Ocean Beer for ArktiskMat

It has become a tradition for the chemistry students to brew beer for the ArktiskMat event. This year they were challenged to create a beer with an ocean theme. Chemistry teacher Marte Bjøraas has taken the students through the chemistry of  brewing and they had a creative session on how to incorporate the ocean into a brew. In the end they decided to make a wheat beer with smoked seaweed! To learn more about beer, we contacted Kristian Sivertsen at Raus Brewery in Nesna. He acted as our consultant along the way, and together with ArktiskMat the students went on a field trip to the brewery. At Raus (which means Generous) they got a tour of the brewery and learned about Raus's philosophy, and the different types of beer they produce. While they were there, they also had a look at the photo exhibition of Hans Petter Sørensen, who is also the photographer behind Raus's beer labels. The students were inspired and also chose to use a photo for their own beer label!

During the last part of the brewing process, ArktiskMat brought in some scallops, and the students were brave enough to test using the scallop shell in the brew! It resulted in an interesting aroma! We are now so stoked to see the students present their project, and serve their beer at the event this fall!
