Aviâja Lyberth Hauptman
Aviâja Lyberth Hauptmann, Ph.D., is a Greenlandic microbiologist and educator.
Her work explores the intersections of Inuit food systems, microbiomes, fermentation, food sovereignty, and Arctic futures.
Bridging science, storytelling, and Indigenous knowledge, she investigates how traditional Greenlandic foods carry ecological, cultural, and microbial histories. Hauptmann has spoken previously at ArktiskMat, and her work has been featured in documentary film, MAD Digest, Nature, BBC, and National Geographic.
Through research, teaching, and public engagement, she creates deeply relational conversations about food, identity, and living well in the Arctic
Arctic foods are nothing if not animal-based. But how would you feel about an animal-based drink?
Aviâja will present work conducted in collaboration with, among others, Diego Prado — also a speaker at this year’s ArktiskMat — on drinking birds and eating intestines.
